Caramel Apple Pie Milkshake Recipe (1)

Fall is my favorite season, and not just for the beautiful Fall foliage and crisp weather.

Tis the season for comfort foods, game day recipes, and decadent desserts!

Fall desserts are some of my favorites, and this caramel apple pie milkshake is no exception.

The spiced apples blended with creamy vanilla ice cream, all topped off with pillowy whipped cream, drizzled with caramel, and dusted with sweet graham crackers… it’s sinfully amazing!

How to make apple pie milkshake recipe?

This is just an overview; the full ingredients and directions are in the recipe card toward the bottom of this post.

Caramel Apple Pie Milkshake Recipe (2)
  1. Blend. For this recipe, the ice cream, milk, and apple pie filling make up the shake.
  2. Serve. We like to serve this in glasses drizzled in caramel, topped with whipped cream, drizzled with more caramel, graham cracker crumbs, and a pinch of cinnamon.

Helpful Tip!

During testing, I found that both French vanilla and vanilla bean ice cream had the best flavor. However, the beauty of this recipe is you can view it as a guide, rather than a strict formula… so please feel free to use the type of ice cream you like best!

Variations of this recipe

  • Ultra creamy– to be more decadent, try swapping half the milk for heavy cream. Oh so amazing!
  • Pie crust – in place of graham cracker crumbs, you could try crumbling some baked pie crust.
  • Ice cream – for some extra flavor, try making this recipe using my Bourbon Vanilla no churn ice cream!
  • Boozy– in case you want to indulge a little, try blending in some caramel, apple, or vanilla vodka!
  • Real pie – if you have any leftover apple pie, instead of apple pie filling, try breaking up a slice of pie and adding it to the blender with the ice cream and milk.
  • Caramel sauce – instead of store-bought sauce, try whipping up a batch of homemade salted caramel!

FAQ’s

How can you thicken a milkshake?

There’s really two main ways to thicken a milkshake. You can add more ice cream and/or flavors (in this case the apple pie filling), or you could add less liquid (in this case the milk).

Making milkshakes ahead of time

You could make this milkshake ahead of time, however it’s not my preferred method. The texture can be difficult to get right when you’re trying to thaw it enough to make it drinkable.

What gives milkshakes their amazing texture is the blend of milk-fats and tiny ice crystals. When you stick it in the freezer, the tiny ice crystals fuse and you are left with a not-very-appetizing block of milky ice.

Since this recipe only take a few minutes to come together, I’d advise just making it when you want it – not ahead.

Storage

Leftover shake (if you have any) should be frozen in an airtight container and consumed within 1-2 months for best taste.

Chef Tips

  1. For a thicker milkshake, use less milk. For a thinner milkshake, use more.
  2. If you have an older blender that may not be as powerful as the newer models, add the milk to the blender first so the blades can move a little easier at the start.

FAQs

What is the secret of a good milkshake? ›

Whole milk makes the creamiest milkshakes, but work with what you've got! From there, consider upgrading and customizing your milkshake with the following ingredients: 1 tablespoon flavor boosts: A spoonful of malted milk powder or powdered milk adds extra creaminess that takes milkshakes to the next level.

What is the best ratio for a milkshake? ›

1 cup ice cream to 1/4 cup milk is a great ratio. Blend the shake. In a blender, combine the milk and ice cream and blend until smooth. Add any your mix-ins and blend them in to your desired consistency.

How to make a thick milkshake without ice cream? ›

For the simplest no-ice-cream milkshake, simply blend ice cubes with milk, sugar, and a dash of vanilla extract. The more fat that's in the milk, the creamier your milkshake will be—if you want a super-creamy milkshake, use equal parts heavy cream and milk.

Why is my apple pie full of liquid? ›

One of the chief reasons bakers end up with apple soup under the crust is failure to bake their pie long enough. There's almost no such thing as over-baking an apple pie; I've baked apple pies for 2 hours and longer, and they turn out just fine.

What is the best milk for milkshakes? ›

Whole milk: Whole milk is the most traditional type of milk used to make milkshakes, and it produces a creamy, thick shake with a rich flavor. Low-fat or non-fat milk: Low-fat or non-fat milk will produce a lighter, less creamy shake compared to whole milk.

What is the best thickener for milkshakes? ›

Frozen ingredients add thickness and help chill the shake without adding excess liquid. Add Thickening Agents: Incorporate thickening agents such as yogurt, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or silken tofu.

What thickens milkshakes? ›

The trick to a thicker milkshake is the ice cream to milk ratio. Use 2 cups of ice cream to 1/2 cup of milk. You will need a spoon to eat this milkshake, not a straw! If you prefer to use a straw and want a thinner milkshake just add in more milk or less ice cream.

What is the best ice cream to use for milkshakes? ›

The Best Ice Cream

In most cases, stick with vanilla ice cream to avoid a milkshake that's too sweet. Even if you're making a chocolate, strawberry, or some other flavor of shake, vanilla ice cream is like the blank canvas that allows you to get the flavor just right.

What makes McDonald's milkshake thick? ›

Great question. Our shakes contain milk from our reduced-fat soft serve, which makes them thick and creamy.

What apples should not be used for apple pie? ›

There are a few apples that don't make the cut. While great for snacking, Gala, Fuji and Red Delicious are the most common apples that won't hold up in the oven and will give you a watery-mushy pie, tart or cake.

Why put a raw egg in a milkshakes? ›

Raw eggs are quite nutritious, and don't really add any flavour to the milkshake. What they do add is a delicious creaminess and frothiness. Having said that, the egg is totally optional so if you are queasy about the idea, or worried about salmonella poisoning, just leave it out.

Why is my milkshake not creamy? ›

Too much milk can leave the shake overly thick, resembling something closer to ice cream instead. On the flip side, not using enough milk can result in a shake that has little to no consistency, akin to a kind of sugary syrup. In order to try and find the right amount, pour the milk into the blender bit by bit.
